Shacharit

ShacharitMorning prayer
The Morning Amidah — every word, in English and sounded out.
Weekday · Nusach Ashkenaz19 blessingsAbout 5–10 minutes
When

When to say it

Morning — from sunrise; ideally within the first third of the day, and no later than midday (Mishnah Berachot 4:1).

Berachot 26bDirect Source

Avraham instituted the morning prayer: “Avraham rose early in the morning to the place where he had stood” (Bereishit 19:27). It corresponds to the morning daily offering in the Temple.

Before: Comes right after the Shema and its blessings — go straight from “ga’al Yisrael” (who redeemed Israel) into the Amidah, without pausing (Berachot 4b).

Halachic note: Times, seasonal inserts, and what to do if you forget one (for example “mashiv haru’ach” in winter) have detailed rules that differ between communities. Pray from your community’s siddur, and ask your rabbi about your own practice.
How to stand

The choreography

  1. Find a quiet place and face Jerusalem (in the Americas and Europe, generally east).
  2. Take three steps back, then three steps forward — approaching the King.
  3. Stand with your feet together.
  4. Say the opening verse (below).
  5. At the first blessing: bend your knees at “Baruch,” bow at “atah,” and stand straight at “Adonai.” Do the same at its end, “Baruch atah Adonai, magen Avraham.”
  6. Pray quietly — loud enough that you hear yourself, but not others.
  7. At Modim (blessing 18): bow at the beginning and at the end.
  8. After blessing 19, say the closing prayer, “Elohai n’tzor” (My God, guard my tongue from evil).
  9. Take three steps back. Bow left at “Oseh shalom bimromav,” right at “hu ya’aseh shalom aleinu,” and forward at “v’al kol Yisrael, v’imru amen.”
  10. Stand in place a moment, then take three steps forward.

We thank You, for You are the Lord our God and God of our ancestors forever. You are the Rock of our lives, the Shield of our salvation, in every generation. We thank You and tell Your praise — for our lives, which are entrusted into Your hand; for our souls, which are in Your care; for Your miracles that are with us every day; and for Your wonders and goodness at all times — evening, morning and afternoon. The Good One: Your compassion never ends. The Compassionate One: Your kindness never ceases. We have always placed our hope in You. [On Chanukah and Purim: Al HaNissim.] For all these, may Your name be blessed and exalted, our King, continually, forever. All that lives will thank You, Selah, and praise Your name in truth — God, our salvation and our help, Selah. Blessed are You, Lord, whose name is Good, and to whom it is fitting to give thanks.
💡 Bow at “Modim anachnu lach” and again at the closing “Baruch atah Adonai” (Berachot 34a).

Bless us, our Father, all of us as one, with the light of Your face; for by the light of Your face You gave us, Lord our God, a Torah of life and a love of kindness, righteousness, blessing, compassion, life and peace. May it be good in Your eyes to bless Your people Israel at every time and in every hour with Your peace. Blessed are You, Lord, who blesses His people Israel with peace.
💡 In the Ashkenaz siddur, “Sim Shalom” is said at Shacharit — the time of the Priestly Blessing, which it echoes.
Closing

Elohai N’tzor — the closing prayer (Berachot 17a)

Say itElohai, n’tzor l’shoni meira, us’fatai midabeir mirmah. V’limkal’lai nafshi tidom, v’nafshi ke’afar lakol tihyeh. P’tach libi b’Toratecha, uv’mitzvotecha tirdof nafshi. V’chol hachoshvim alai ra’ah, m’heirah hafeir atzatam v’kalkeil machashavtam. Aseih l’ma’an sh’mecha, aseih l’ma’an y’minecha, aseih l’ma’an k’dushatecha, aseih l’ma’an Toratecha. L’ma’an yeichal’tzun y’didecha, hoshi’ah y’min’cha va’aneini. Yihyu l’ratzon imrei fi v’hegyon libi l’fanecha, Adonai tzuri v’go’ali.
My God, guard my tongue from evil and my lips from speaking deceit. To those who curse me, let my soul be silent; let my soul be like dust to all. Open my heart to Your Torah, and let my soul pursue Your commandments. As for all who plan evil against me, swiftly thwart their counsel and frustrate their plans. Act for the sake of Your name; act for the sake of Your right hand; act for the sake of Your holiness; act for the sake of Your Torah. That Your beloved ones may be rescued, save with Your right hand and answer me. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing before You, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

Take three steps back and bow: left, right, forward

Say itOseh shalom bimromav, hu ya’aseh shalom aleinu v’al kol Yisrael, v’imru amen.
He who makes peace in His heights, may He make peace for us and for all Israel, and say: Amen.
💡 Bow left at “Oseh shalom bimromav,” right at “hu ya’aseh shalom aleinu,” and forward at “v’al kol Yisrael, v’imru amen.”

Then

Say itY’hi ratzon mil’fanecha, Adonai Eloheinu v’Elohei avoteinu, sheyibaneh beit hamikdash bimheirah v’yameinu, v’ten chelkeinu b’Toratecha.
May it be Your will, Lord our God and God of our ancestors, that the Holy Temple be rebuilt speedily in our days, and grant us our share in Your Torah.
💡 Stand in place a moment, then take three steps forward.

The Kedushah

When ten pray together, the leader repeats the Amidah aloud. In place of blessing 3, everyone stands with feet together and says the Kedushah — the words the angels say. Many rise on their toes at “Kadosh, kadosh, kadosh.”

Leader

Say itN’kadesh et shimcha ba’olam, k’shem shemakdishim oto bishmei marom, kakatuv al yad n’vi’echa, v’kara zeh el zeh v’amar:
We will sanctify Your name in the world, as they sanctify it in the heavens above, as it is written by Your prophet: “And they call one to another and say:”

Everyone, then leader (Yeshayahu 6:3)

Say itKadosh, kadosh, kadosh Adonai Tz’va’ot, m’lo chol ha’aretz k’vodo.
Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Hosts; the whole world is filled with His glory.

Leader

Say itL’umatam baruch yomeiru:
Facing them, they say “Blessed”:

Everyone, then leader (Yechezkel 3:12)

Say itBaruch k’vod Adonai mim’komo.
Blessed is the glory of the Lord from His place.

Leader

Say itUv’divrei kodsh’cha katuv leimor:
And in Your holy writings it is written:

Everyone, then leader (Tehillim 146:10)

Say itYimloch Adonai l’olam, Elohayich Tziyon l’dor vador, hal’luyah.
The Lord shall reign forever — your God, O Zion, from generation to generation. Halleluyah.

Leader

Say itL’dor vador nagid godlecha, ul’neitzach n’tzachim k’dushat’cha nakdish, v’shivchacha Eloheinu mipinu lo yamush l’olam va’ed, ki El melech gadol v’kadosh atah. Baruch atah Adonai, ha’El hakadosh.
From generation to generation we will tell of Your greatness, and for all eternity we will proclaim Your holiness. Your praise, our God, will never leave our mouth, for You are God, the great and holy King. Blessed are You, Lord, the holy God.

The Priestly Blessing

In the leader’s repetition, before “Sim Shalom.” Outside Israel on weekdays the leader says it; in Israel (and on festivals in the Diaspora) the Kohanim bless the congregation themselves.

Leader (introduction)

Say itEloheinu v’Elohei avoteinu, bar’cheinu vab’rachah ham’shuleshet baTorah, hak’tuvah al y’dei Moshe avdecha, ha’amurah mipi Aharon uvanav, kohanim am k’doshecha, ka’amur:
Our God and God of our ancestors, bless us with the threefold blessing in the Torah, written by Moshe Your servant, spoken by Aharon and his sons, the Kohanim, Your holy people, as it is said:

Bamidbar 6:24 — answer “May it be His will”

Say itY’varech’cha Adonai v’yishm’recha. — Kein y’hi ratzon.
May the Lord bless you and protect you.

Bamidbar 6:25

Say itYa’eir Adonai panav eilecha vichuneka. — Kein y’hi ratzon.
May the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you.

Bamidbar 6:26

Say itYisa Adonai panav eilecha v’yaseim l’cha shalom. — Kein y’hi ratzon.
May the Lord lift up His face toward you and grant you peace.

Changes through the year

This page contains Hebrew prayer text with the Divine Name. If you print it, please treat it respectfully and dispose of it appropriately (in genizah).

This is the weekday Amidah in Nusach Ashkenaz. Nusach Sefard (Chassidic and Chabad) and Sephardi siddurim differ in a few words and use Sim Shalom at every service. Pray from the siddur of your family or shul, and for a personal question, ask a rabbi you trust.
